We had flights booked to see three places near Tulum, and a week before we left I sent all three sellers the same short message: can you send me a photograph of the street taken from the front door, today.

Two replied within a day. One of those photographs showed building work directly opposite that had not appeared in a single listing image, and we took that place off the list before we boarded.

The third never answered, which told us something too.

We saw two houses instead of three, spent the spare day walking the neighbourhood, and came home knowing more than we would have otherwise.
